Who is Jack Ryan?

A multi-award-winning science and videogames journalist. I have previously been the science editor at US tech powerhouse CNET.com and a science and tech reporter for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

I am the President for the Science Journalists Association of Australia and am a passionate advocate for science and video games journalism in Australia, and creating opportunities for Australia’s incredible, diverse community of science writers and reporters.

In 2026, I co-founded CONTINUE? — a defiant, new videogames magazine — with my good friend, mentor and fairy bread hater, Mark Serrels. Our Kickstarter for Issue 01 was fully funded in just seven hours. In total, we raised $102,594. We will be launching in September 2026.

Alongside Carl Smith, I am the co-editor of the Best Australian Science Writing 2024 — an anthology you should definitely buy (and can do so right here). I also write a weekly newsletter: Nobreakthroughs., which examines shonky science, shonky science reporting and explores how we can do science journalism better.
